Signs From God You're Missing & How to Finally Hear Them

You are already receiving communication from God, but you may simply not recognize the language.

We are receiving communication from God, divine intelligence, Source, our Higher Self, or whatever name resonates with you. The communication is happening whether we realize it or not. The challenge is that we often expect it to look very different from the way it actually happens. We may be waiting for a lightning bolt, an unmistakable sign, a voice speaking directly to us, or some dramatic spiritual experience. But divine communication is often much more subtle.

It shows up through intuition, synchronicity, patterns that keep appearing, a feeling that something is right or wrong, and through meditation, nature, creativity, or simply becoming quiet enough to notice what is already there.

Let's Start with this Word: God

The word "God" can be complicated for many people. For some, God is deeply connected to a religious upbringing that they may have put behind them. Feeling repelled from religious organizations or teachings may have created distance from the word or concept of God. I understand that, and I've used words like Source, the universe, infinite intelligence, and divine intelligence to try to sidestep the loaded word, "God."

But when I use words like Source, the Universe, Divine Intelligence, etc, I'm talking about God.

I don't think of God as an old man sitting somewhere in the sky (although I did when I was little). I experience God as an energy and an intelligence that permeates everything and is connected to everything.

And that means you don't need an intermediary to connect with God. You are already connected. The question isn't really how to create a connection with God, but rather how to become more aware of it.

God May Not Communicate in the Way You Expect

It's important to step back and consider the expectation you have about what communication from God should look like. Maybe you think you'll hear a voice. Or that you'll close your eyes in meditation and suddenly see something extraordinary. Maybe you expect that a stranger will approach you and deliver a perfectly timed message that answers the exact question you've been asking.

Those things can happen, what a delightful miracle when they do! But it doesn't have to be something so dramatic to be communication from God. In fact, I'd argue that it's much more likely to be subtle.

Think about trying to communicate with someone who speaks a different language. If you insist that the only valid form of communication is for them to speak your language, you may miss everything they're trying to tell you.

You could learn their language. You could use gestures. You could draw pictures. You could find other ways to understand one another when you're willing to go beyond the one way you are most comfortable receiving messages.

So it is with divine intelligence. We have to become willing to learn the language.

Synchronicity: One Way the Universe Speaks

We often think of synchronicity as those fascinating moments when two seemingly unrelated things line up. You might be thinking about a particular subject and then hear someone unexpectedly talking about it. You might watch something about a topic and then encounter that same topic again elsewhere in your day.

Those moments can be beautiful. But I think synchronicity can be even bigger than isolated coincidences.

I think of it as a repeating pattern. You may begin noticing that seemingly unrelated pieces of your life keep connecting to one another. Something unfolds in a way that feels almost too perfectly orchestrated to have been consciously planned.

That happened in a conversation I had recently with someone who had created a project I was part of. As I looked at what they had created, I could see a beautiful thread running through it. There were themes and connections that had built upon one another in ways that had not been intentionally planned, but they were masterful if you stepped back and took notice of them.

When I pointed this out to the creator of the project, they were surprised because they hadn't been able to see the bigger pattern themselves. As I suspected, they were so involved in the details it was hard to see the bigger picture. They couldn't see the forest for the trees.

This is one of the ways we can experience divine intelligence at work. Sometimes the communication isn't a clear message telling us exactly what to do. Rather, the divine communication is in the pattern itself.

Incidentally, the creator of this project  told me that they had been wanting to strengthen their intuition and deepen their connection beyond the five senses. To that end, they had started meditating. They were intentionally making space for spirituality. They wanted to experience more mystery and magic in their life. But they hadn't felt like anything was happening.

And my response was: It definitely is happening! The very thing we were discussing was evidence of it. The way their project had the mysterious thread that tied everything together in a way that was extremely intelligent but had not happened through human will illustrated exactly that God was responding to her desire to be more connected.

Sometimes we are so focused on looking for a particular kind of spiritual experience that we overlook what is already happening around us. Learning how to communicate with God involves becoming more aware of the subtle signals that are already present. That requires slowing down.

Meditation Creates Space to Receive

If you know my work, you already know that I come back to meditation often. Meditation has been instrumental in my own journey, but you don't necessarily have to take up a formal meditation practice if that seems like too much (but, it isn't).

You can simply give yourself some space. Take a few moments to breathe. Let the noise settle. Let the mental clutter fall away. Give yourself permission to simply be. The more space you create, the more opportunity you have to notice what is happening within you.

When your life is filled with constant stimulation, it can be difficult to perceive a subtle intuitive hit. There is simply too much noise. Stillness changes that.

Nature Can Help You Connect

If meditation feels difficult or your life feels too chaotic to establish a formal practice, try nature. Go for a walk without listening to a podcast or audiobook. Put your phone away. Don't fill the silence with something else. Instead, look at the sky. Notice the birds. Watch the grass moving. Listen to the insects. Let yourself actually be where you are.

Nature can create the spaciousness that allows you to reconnect with yourself. And when you connect more deeply with yourself, you can also become more aware of your connection with divine intelligence.

Get Out of the Digital World

We are surrounded by stimulation through our digital use. Notifications, social media, podcasts, videos, emails, news, and endless information are constantly competing for our attention.

All of that creates noise. So try spending some time in the analog world. Write by hand. Draw. Create something. Walk outside. Sit quietly. Breathe.

These simple activities can help you move away from the constant stream of information and back into your own experience. And that is where intuition can become easier to perceive.

You Are Part of the Flow

Ultimately, I don't believe that divine communication is something that only happens to a select few people. You are connected to divine intelligence. You are an expression of that larger flow.

The more you connect, the more you may begin to recognize the ways that connection is reflected back to you.

So if you've been asking, "How do I communicate with God?" I would encourage you to begin by asking a slightly different question: What if God is already communicating with me, and I'm learning how to recognize it?

Instead of waiting for the lightning bolt, start paying attention to the subtle things. Notice your intuition, the patterns, synchronicities, and what keeps appearing.

Create space. Get quiet. Spend time in nature. Meditate. Write. Create.

And most importantly, become curious.

You may discover that the communication you've been asking for has been happening all along.
