Why Your Life Falls Apart to Align Your Highest Good
We've all had those periods in life when it seems like your entire life is falling apart. Whether it's the end of a relationship, a job that disappears, an unwanted move, a loss that comes seemingly out of nowhere. Or maybe several difficult things happen at once, leaving you wondering what in the world is going on. When you're in the middle of it, it's easy to think something has gone terribly wrong.
But what if those chaotic and disparaging times aren't what they seem?
Sometimes the things that look to be breaking down are actually creating space for something new. And sometimes the chaos that feels like it's pulling you off your path is actually propelling you toward the next version of yourself. This is the focus of episode 639 of Soul Elevation.
We go through many different iterations of ourselves during a lifetime. I believe the main reason we're here in this life is to experience, learn, expand, and grow.
But as humans, we also have a tendency to get comfortable, and we often confuse comfort for the definition of life going in our favor. Even when we know something isn't quite right, we often stay where we are because it's familiar. We may know we're not fulfilled in our job, relationship, location, or way of living, but familiarity has a gravitational pull.
We don't always voluntarily choose the unknown. Sometimes life gives us a needed push.
From a spiritual perspective, there may be times when God or your Higher Self is calling you toward another phase of your life, but you're not responding to those quiet nudges. Eventually, things may become uncomfortable enough that you have to go in the direction the higher guidance has been trying to get you to move to. The job ends. The relationship changes. The circumstances you relied upon are suddenly gone.
At first, this can look like everything is falling apart. But with time and hindsight, you may come to see that your life was actually making room for the new.
My Own Experience of Life Falling Apart
Many years ago, I was living abroad with my family. I wasn't working at the time, and my life was really comfortable. I spent time with friends and my little family, enjoyed hobbies, and had plenty of spaciousness in my life.
Then everything changed very rapidly.
Within about seven months, I experienced the heartbreaking death of my sister-in-law and our family dog within a couple of weeks of each other, a serious medical diagnosis for my stepfather requiring a delicate surgery, a critical accident for my mother-in-law, and one of the most serious of surgeries - a heart transplant - for my stepmom.
It seemed like every time I began to stabilize from one devastating event, something else happened. I remember waking up in the morning and slowly remembering everything that was going on. Some days, it felt like my job was simply to make it through the day until I could just go back to sleep.
It was an incredibly disorienting time. It felt like my life was built on shifting sands.
And yet, that period ultimately completely changed the trajectory of my life.
At that time, I wasn't consciously trying to have a spiritual awakening. I just wanted to cope. I needed something that could calm me down and help me deal emotionally with everything happening around me. That need led me to meditation.
As I faithfully began meditating every day, something unexpected happened. I'd decided to learn meditation just to help me feel better, but relatively quickly my practice went beyond relaxation. I began having small spiritual experiences. I would see light behind my closed eyes, feel light moving through my body, and experience things that began changing my understanding of myself and reality.
Meditation helped calm my nervous system and mind, but it ultimately became much more than that. It changed how I saw the world and how I cared for myself. And it opened me to an entirely different relationship with spirituality.
Looking back, I can see that I actually had plenty of time to explore meditation, God, and my Higher Self before those tragedies happened. I easily could have started opening myself up to those things that would become such a big part of who I came here to be. I simply wasn't doing it within the comforts of the life I was enjoying. It took my life seemingly falling apart to initiate a profound change within me.
Sometimes Chaos Creates Space
When we experience major life changes, we usually can't see what they're creating while they're happening. We only see what we're losing.
Imagine a relationship suddenly ending. In that moment, you may only feel the pain, uncertainty, and disruption. But what if that relationship was also occupying energetic, emotional, or practical space that was preventing something else from entering your life? You may not recognize what was being held back until that space opens.
The same thing can happen with a job, friendship, home, identity, belief system, or entire way of living. When something leaves, there is suddenly room. And sometimes it isn't until much later that you look back and realize,"Oh. Now I can see I would have never gotten here under those circumstances."
You couldn't see where the path was leading while you were walking through the chaos.
We may assume that spiritual growth is something peaceful and beautiful. And it certainly can be.
But growth can also involve bringing things to the surface that need to be seen and reconciled. Sometimes what isn't aligned becomes impossible to ignore. That can feel like chaos.
If you're going through a period like this, consider that things may not necessarily be going wrong. Something may be reorganizing. Something old may have reached its completion. Something that once fit you may no longer match who you're becoming. And life may be creating the spaciousness necessary for your next chapter.
What to Do When Your Life Is Falling Apart
If you're in the thick of a difficult period, you don't have to understand the entire purpose of what's happening. In fact, you probably can't right now. It's normal to need hindsight to bring clarity that isn't accessible while you're living through the experience.
Instead of trying understand everything, just focus on your next step.
Talk to God. Talk to your Higher Self. Ask for guidance. Ask to be shown what you need to know. Ask for your next step to become obvious. Ask to be guided toward your highest good.
And then pay attention. There can be tremendous power in surrendering the need to know exactly where everything is going while continuing to ask for guidance about what comes next.
There's another piece of this that I think is important. Spirituality doesn't have to equal being solemn all the time. We are spiritual beings, but we're also here in human bodies. We're here to experience this Earth realm. Experiencing joy and movement are nourishing to our souls. Dancing, singing, laughing, and putting on music that makes you want to move can shift your state. Sometimes physically moving your body can help shake loose some of what you've been carrying.
Spiritual growth isn't only about transcending the human experience. It's also about being fully here for it.
What If Your Life Isn't Falling Apart, but Reorganizing?
When your life falls apart, there is no need to pretend that the experience isn't painful. Some changes are genuinely difficult. Some losses are devastating. But the pain of an experience doesn't have to be the end of the story. You may be leaving behind a version of your life that could no longer take you where your soul wants to go. You may be finishing a path that had reached its end. You may be creating room for relationships, opportunities, spiritual growth, purpose, or possibilities you can't even imagine yet.
So if you're in a season where everything seems chaotic, keep asking for guidance. Keep connecting with God and your Higher Self. Keep asking for the next step.
And leave room for the possibility that what feels like everything falling apart could eventually reveal itself as the beginning of something much greater.
