How to Know You're on the Right Spiritual Path | Signs You're Awakening
It can be surprisingly difficult to tell if you’re on the right path during a spiritual awakening. We're living in a time when there is so much vying for our attention. There are endless voices telling us what to believe, who to trust, what is happening in the world, and even what we should think about ourselves.
For those going through a spiritual awakening, this can become even more complicated. You may begin questioning things you once took for granted. Systems or authorities you used to trust may no longer feel aligned. Even within spiritual communities, you may encounter teachings, leaders, or practices that require deeper discernment. It all requires discernment, and this is the topic in episode 642 of Soul Elevation.
There is something incredibly important to remember in the midst of it all: Your spiritual awakening is ultimately bringing you back to yourself.
More specifically, it is strengthening your connection with your soul.
Spiritual Awakening Can Feel Disorienting
Sometimes we need to zoom way out to understand what we are experiencing. Modern life gives us conveniences our ancestors could hardly have imagined. We can turn on a faucet and have clean water. We can take a warm shower whenever we want. We can access food, information, entertainment, and communication almost instantly.
In some ways, life has never been easier.
And yet many people feel increasingly overwhelmed, disconnected, confused, or spiritually untethered. When you begin awakening spiritually, you may also start questioning some of the structures and beliefs you previously relied upon. Things may not seem as straightforward as they once did, which can initially feel disempowering.
But it can also become an invitation. Instead of continually looking outside yourself for someone else to tell you what is true, you can begin strengthening the connection within yourself.
Connecting with your soul does not have to be complicated. You don’t need an elaborate ritual, to travel somewhere sacred, or another person to act as the intermediary between you and God or Source.
Start with stillness. Give yourself a little time each day to become quiet. Set the intention to connect with your soul and with Pure Source Consciousness. Then simply allow yourself to be present.
You don't have to force something to happen. You don’t need to see visions, receive profound messages, or have a mystical experience to prove that you are doing it correctly.
Simply keep showing up.
Five or ten minutes of genuine connection practiced consistently can begin creating profound changes in your relationship with yourself. I think about this almost like compound interest. You connect with your soul today. Then you do it again tomorrow. And again the next day.
Little by little, you strengthen your ability to recognize what feels aligned and what doesn’t. You become more familiar with your own energy. You become more sensitive to your inner guidance. Eventually, that connection begins flowing into your everyday life, even when you are not in intentional stillness. Your soul starts expressing itself more fully through your decisions, relationships, creativity, work, and the way you move through the world.
This is why spiritual practices such as meditation can be so powerful. The point isn’t necessarily to have an extraordinary experience every time you sit down. The practice is the connection itself.
Spiritual Discernment Is Essential During Awakening
As your spiritual awareness expands, discernment becomes incredibly important. Not everything labeled “spiritual” is necessarily aligned for you.
I learned this personally when I became involved with a spiritual group several years ago. Interestingly, when I first encountered them, something immediately felt off. But then I listened to what they were teaching. They were discussing sophisticated spiritual concepts that resonated with things I already understood. The people involved seemed incredibly enthusiastic and appeared to be having meaningful experiences. So I explored it.
At the same time, part of me continued observing. Is this right for me? Is this what I think it is? Are there warning signs I’m overlooking?
Eventually, people who had been involved much longer than me began speaking publicly about troubling experiences within the group. I realized some of those early signals I had noticed were relevant after all. I write more about this experience and the warning signs I encountered in my book, Your Authentic Awakening, because spiritual discernment is something I believe we desperately need to talk about.
You Will Not Navigate Your Spiritual Path Perfectly
One of the biggest misconceptions about spiritual awakening is that once you become spiritually aware, you should somehow stop making mistakes and life will become some form of perfection. But that isn’t how it works.
You may trust something and later realize it wasn’t right for you. You may follow a teacher and eventually outgrow their teachings. You may ignore your intuition and later understand exactly what it had been trying to tell you.
You may take what looks like a wrong turn. That doesn’t mean you have failed. Sometimes the experiences we label as failures become some of our greatest sources of wisdom.
The important thing is to remain willing to reevaluate.
You can say: I thought this was right for me. Now I see something I couldn’t see before. I’m going to learn from it and choose differently next time.
Nothing is wasted when it becomes wisdom.
It's also important to beware of outsourcing your authority. We can do this with spiritual teachers. We can do it with institutions. And increasingly, we can even do it with AI.
Technology can be an incredibly useful tool. But there is an important difference between using a tool and allowing that tool to replace your own discernment.
The same applies to spiritual teachers. A good teacher may help you see something differently, introduce you to a useful practice, or help illuminate something within yourself.
But ultimately, your spiritual path should strengthen your relationship with your own soul and with Source, not make you increasingly dependent upon someone or something outside yourself. Your discernment, inner connection, and direct relationship with God are primary.
Understand that your spiritual awakening will have twists and turns, and it will not be perfect (whatever you think perfection means).
When you become quiet and turn inward, you may encounter parts of yourself that are not what you hope they would be. You might find an old wound. You might become aware of something you need to change. You will begin to see where you have been acting from fear, ego, resentment, insecurity, or a need for approval.
That doesn’t mean you are doing spirituality wrong. That is part of being human, and becoming aware of these things that have been hidden under the surface is part of spiritual growth. Spiritual awakening isn’t about escaping your humanity. You're allowing more consciousness, more love, and more of your authentic soul expression to move through your human experience.
How Do You Know You’re on the Right Spiritual Path?
You may be looking for a dramatic sign that confirms you are exactly where you are supposed to be. But consider something much simpler. The fact that you are asking these questions at all speaks volumes. The fact that your eyes are reading this post, or that you have listened to episodes of Soul Elevation and similar content shows your dedication to living in alignment with your soul.
If you are actively seeking greater truth, strengthening your relationship with your soul, examining your choices, developing discernment, and becoming more conscious of how you move through the world, something is already happening within you. You are participating in your awakening.
You don’t have to do it perfectly. In fact, there is no perfect spiritual path. There is only your precious path.
And sometimes it involves experimenting, learning, adjusting, surrendering, and beginning again.
When the world feels chaotic, spirituality can start feeling complicated too. There are countless teachings, predictions, practices, teachers, technologies, belief systems, and competing interpretations of what is happening.
Come back to simplicity. Become still. Become quiet. Connect with your soul. Connect with God, Source, or however you understand that pure Divine consciousness. Set the intention to allow more of your soul to express through your body and your life. Then come back tomorrow and do it again. And the next day, do it again. Over time, that connection strengthens. Your discernment strengthens. Your trust strengthens.
And instead of constantly searching outside yourself for proof that you are on the right path, you begin developing a deeper relationship with the guidance that has been within you all along.
Your soul begins to sing through your life.
And that is one of the most powerful signs that you are exactly where you need to be.
