The Key to Accelerating Your Spiritual Growth & Avoiding Spiritual Traps

The Key to Accelerating Your Spiritual Growth & Avoiding Spiritual Traps

There is often an idea in spiritual circles that awakening is a destination. Many people imagine that if they meditate enough, read the right books, or follow the correct teachings, they will eventually arrive at a permanent state of enlightenment. I know I felt that way for a long time. But the deeper truth is that spiritual development doesn't have a finish line. It is an ongoing evolution of the soul.

In episode 563 of Soul Elevation, I reflect on the nature of spiritual growth and what it really means to evolve spiritually while living a human life. Transcendental experiences can offer glimpses into deeper layers of reality. For instance, moments where the mind quiets and something vast, eternal, and divine becomes visible beyond the surface of the physical world. It can feel like stepping outside the matrix and touching the deeper truth of existence. Yet even after the most profound spiritual experiences, life continues. The everyday responsibilities return. I love the old adage: before enlightenment-  chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment- chop wood, carry water. The human experience goes on.

This gets to the heart of this livestream's topic. If we can touch these expanded states of consciousness, why can’t we remain there permanently? One possibility is that we are not meant to. The human experience itself may be the point. From this perspective, the soul chooses to incarnate in a physical body because the human experience provides a unique opportunity for growth. In spirit form we exist in a state of greater awareness, but physical life creates contrast, challenge, and discovery which allow the soul to expand in ways that are not possible in purely spiritual realms.

This means that spiritual development does not require abandoning the physical world. Instead, the growth of the soul actually happens through our engagement with it. Our relationships, choices, interests, and passions all become part of the evolutionary process. From this point of view, even people who appear uninterested in spirituality may still be following their soul’s path. Some souls may choose to fully immerse themselves in the physical experience, focusing on money, success, appearance, or external achievements. Through those experiences they may eventually discover that external markers alone do not create fulfillment. That realization itself becomes a form of spiritual learning.

For those who do feel a pull toward spiritual development, the most powerful guide may be something surprisingly simple: Follow what genuinely lights you up. Many teachers have expressed this idea in different ways. For instance, the popular teachings of Bashar include following your excitement or joy. When you pursue what naturally draws your curiosity and enthusiasm, you move into alignment with your deeper self.

This doesn't mean chasing momentary pleasure or escaping responsibility. Rather, it means paying attention to the activities, studies, and experiences that create a sense of aliveness inside you to reveal the direction your soul is guiding you. For one person that might be meditation. For another it might be breathwork, energy healing, art, nature, or studying consciousness. These interests are signals pointing toward areas of growth and expression for the unique individual.

At the same time, the early stages of spiritual awakening can be a time of exploration. Many people begin listening to teachers, reading books, and exploring different modalities in order to understand the spiritual landscape. There is nothing wrong with that. Learning from others can provide valuable guidance and support. However, it's important to remember that no external system contains the complete path for every individual.

One of the challenges I came across in my own journey involved participating in a spiritual organization where the practices were sincere and the people were kind. Yet over time I noticed that we were being encouraged to see spirituality as only equating to one particular style, aesthetic, and set of beliefs. I was given the sense that spiritual people should look a certain way, listen to certain music, and follow specific teachings. As I was getting my bearings as to what spiritual living was all about, I accepted this as truth. But eventually it became clear that this approach was limiting personal exploration, and I eventually came to realize spirituality is not a one size fits all, no matter how inconvenient that can be for people wanting to package it up so they can sell it!

A specific example of how this was revealed to me was when I asked an elder in the organization for his thoughts about the Enneagram, a personality framework that others had recommended as a great tool for personal insight. This man advised that the group’s "master" had not used the Enneagram and therefore it was unnecessary to explore it. For me, stifling advice like this is a red flag. When a system discourages curiosity or insists that all answers exist within one teacher or tradition, it creates a narrowing of perspective that is unhealthy for genuine growth.

Spiritual evolution thrives in openness. It welcomes exploration, learning, and curiosity. It seems obvious to me that no single teacher, modality, or organization can contain the infinite ways that consciousness expresses itself through human beings. This does not mean an outright rejecting of spiritual communities or teachings. Many groups provide meaningful support and wisdom. But healthy spiritual environments encourage independence, questioning, and personal discovery rather than limiting it. Be mindful of getting too deeply entrenched in any spiritual organization, as it is all to easy for something that created spiritual excitement, growth, and wisdom on your path to become co-dependent and stagnant.

Authentic spirituality is not about appearances, owning crystals, listening to certain types of music, or speaking in confusing spiritual language. Some of the most genuinely spiritually grounded people may have little interest in discussing spirituality at all. Their kindness, integrity, and compassion naturally reflect something deep within their being. Every person is a unique expression of consciousness. The purpose of spiritual growth is not to imitate someone else’s path but to embody the truth of who you are.

This is why following your inner guidance becomes so important. When you allow your curiosity and joy to guide you, your path unfolds naturally. You may explore one modality for a period of time and then feel drawn toward another. Your interests may evolve as you grow. Let yourself experience the natural fluidity of your life's journey.

Ultimately, spiritual evolution is about allowing the light of your soul to express itself through your human life. Each day becomes an opportunity to invite that deeper presence into your thoughts, actions, and relationships. When you ask for Pure Source Light to fill your being and allow it to radiate through you, your life begins to align with your authentic essence. From that place, your interests, creativity, and contributions become natural expressions of your soul.

Spiritual awakening is not about escaping the world. It is about fully inhabiting your life as the unique being you came here to be.
