Does Evil Really Exist? Mind Virus, Fear, and the Path to Spiritual Liberation

Listen or watch

Does evil really exist, or is it a story meant to control us?

In this episode of Soul Elevation, I explore a question that has been coming into sharp focus for me: Is evil real—and if so, why would a loving Creator allow it?

Growing up in a loosely Christian household, evil was simply assumed. Later, as I moved through agnosticism, yogic meditation, and Buddhist teachings, I wondered if evil was only a human construct, a control mechanism used by organized religion.

Recently, Paul Levy’s book about Wetiko reopened this conversation for me. Wetiko, a Native American term, describes a contagious “mind virus.” Levy explains how fear spreads like an energetic parasite, feeding on our attention and siphoning our life force.

Key insights from the episode

  • Fear as manipulation: Fear is an incredibly powerful energy, easily used to control and divide.

  • Evil as inversion: Evil is literally live spelled backwards—an inversion of life and truth.

  • Parasitic forces: Beings cut off from Source cannot generate their own energy, so they provoke fear and drama to feed.

  • Divine paradox: If God created everything, how can evil exist? Perhaps, at the highest level, darkness becomes a tool for our awakening.

When we recognize fear for what it is, we can refuse to give it power. This is where salvation lies. Our challenges—even our darkest nights of the soul—become opportunities to grow stronger, wiser, and more compassionate.

“Through suffering we become more compassionate, and ultimately we return to Source.”
